Step 4)

Glue the dinosaur’s sharp teeth to the inside of the paper plate near the edge. To make gluing easier, create a fold in the template pieces, so they form a 90 degree angle and you have a flat strip of the construction paper to glue onto the plate.

For a good example of how to glue the template pieces on, check out the video tutorial on our YouTube channel.

Tips & Troubleshooting

Prepare the Workspace:

Cover the table or workspace with newspaper or a plastic tablecloth to protect it from paint and glue. This makes cleanup easier and prevents any messes on surfaces.

Ensure that the materials used are safe for children. Non-toxic paint, child-safe scissors, and glue suitable for kids are recommended.

Depending on the age of the children, adult supervision may be necessary, especially when using scissors or handling small objects like googly eyes.

Encourage Creativity:

Encourage children to add their own unique touches to their dinosaur puppets. They can experiment with different colors, patterns, or even add extra decorations like glitter or stickers.

Glue Troubles:

If template pieces don’t stick well to the paper plate when you use a glue stick, you can try white glue or double-sided tape. Press firmly and hold in place for a few seconds to ensure a secure bond.

Adapt for Different Ages:

Younger children may need more assistance cutting and assembling their own dinosaurs, while older children may enjoy more independence. Tailor the level of involvement and complexity of the craft to suit the age and skill level of the children participating.

Variation Ideas

Different Dinosaur Species:

Instead of a generic dinosaur, focus on specific species like T-Rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, or Brachiosaurus. Provide reference images or books for children to choose their favorite dinosaur to create. Your child could also try making a bunch of different paper plate dinosaurs or a whole family of them.

Texture Exploration:

What do you think dino skin feels like? Experiment with different textures for the dinosaur’s skin. Instead of painting the paper plate, children can use tissue paper collage, sponge painting, or even bubble wrap stamping to create a textured effect.

Themed Party Activity:

If you’re hosting a dinosaur-themed party or playdate, set up a crafting station with all the materials prepped and let children create their dinosaur puppets as a party activity. They can then use their puppets for games or a puppet show once they’re finished making this easy dinosaur craft.
