Earth Day Sensory Activity That Kids Will Love

Are you looking for a fun way to celebrate Earth Day? I put together a simple sensory activity that only requires a few supplies. You can also reuse the rice for a future project. Kids will love this Earth Day sensory activity. They will be able to use their imagination, work on fine motor skills and discuss the importance of protecting our planet.

How to Set Up Your Earth Day Sensory Activity

Making the Dyed Rice for Earth

  • Rice
  • Tray or baking sheet
  • Food Coloring
  • White distilled vinegar
  • Paper towel, foil or parchment paper
  • Gallon storage bags

  1. First, add three cups of long grain white rice into a gallon size storage bag. Use two separate bags for the green and blue rice.
  2. Next, add about 5 to 10 drops of blue food coloring to one of the storage bags. More food coloring equal darker rice. Repeat this step for the second storage bag but use green food coloring.
  3. Pour a tablespoon of white distilled vinegar in both storage bags. If you use one cup of rice for this sensory activity, only add one teaspoon of vinegar.
  4. Seal the bags properly then shake. Move the rice around until it’s evenly coated with the food coloring.
  5. Finally, spread the colored rice an aluminum-foil lined baking sheet or paper towel. I decided to use both the foil and paper towel. You can also use parchment paper. Let it dry for at least one hour.

Setting Up Your Sensory Tray

  • Round tray
  • Ocean animals
  • Rice (blue & green)
  • Toaster tongs (optional)
  • Recycled magazine

  1. Start by filling your tray with blue rice (ocean) then add the green rice (land).
  2. Next, cut out different food items from a recycled magazine. This will represent the trash that will end up in the ocean.
  3. Finally, add the ocean animals to the tray. You can also add the magazine cut outs. Use the tongs to remove the “trash” from the ocean.

Don’t worry if you little ones mix the rice. This activity is all about having fun and learning. Let them explore the different textures and discuss the importance of Earth Day. You can form a heart using the tops of recycled food pouches. Make sure to store the rice from this Earth Day sensory activity in an airtight container once your child is finished with their sensory activity.
